Portugal is one of the countries with the lowest VAT gap in the European Union

Portugal is among the best-performing countries in the European Union in terms of VAT collection, with a VAT gap of just 3.6 per cent, well below the European average. The country ranks fourth in the EU, ahead of several major economies. Nevertheless, experts warn that these results primarily reflect greater tax enforcement and do not necessarily signify the end of the shadow economy.
